FAQ

  • How does paint your own pottery work?
Look through Glaze's online catalog and find a piece of pottery that inspires you. Choose your glazes from preset palettes or from our collection of over 60 glazes. At checkout select curbside pick up or shipping. Paint your pottery in the comfort and safety of your own home. Drop off your finished piece at our studio. We will fire it then have it ready for final curbside pickup or delivery.
  • Can I return a piece of pottery that I purchased?
Yes. Anything that has not been painted can be returned. Returns must contain all the included glazes for a full refund.
  • Do I have to fire my piece a second time?
Yes! If your paint your piece with glaze it must be fired again. Otherwise the colors can flake or rub off and some glaze have a slight toxicity before they are fired (These glazes are labled and should not be used by young children. If you don't want to fire your piece after its painted, you can choose the 'Bisque only' option at checkout. The 'Bisque only' selection does not come with glazes and doesn't include a second firing. You can purchase arcrylic paints from craft store to paint your piece. If you are making a funtional object that will hold water or used for eating or drinking you must use glaze and have it fired a second time or it will not be safe to use.
  • Is there a time limit that I have to get the glaze-painted piece back to you by for the second firing?
    No.
  • Can you ship your pieces?
Yes. However, you would have to pay the shipping costs. If you don't live in or near Ann Arbor, it would probably be easiest for you to choose the 'Bisque only' option and use arcrylics if you don't have access to a kiln where you live.
  • What does 'bisque' mean?
After a piece of pottery if fired once, it is called bisque. Bisque can be painted with glaze and fired again for a glassy hard surface or can be painted with arcrylics (which does not require a second firing).
  • Are glazes toxic to paint with?
Most of the glazes that we carry are non-toxic. Some glazes have a small amount of toxicity before they are fired. These glazes are labled and should not be used by small children who might try to put the brushes in their mouths. There are a couple glazes that are not safe to use on functional objects that you would eat and drink from. These are also labeled. Glazes that contain crystals are non-toxic but do not fire to a smooth surface and are therefore not recommended for the area of a piece that would be used for eating or drinking because bacteria could collect in the grooves.
